The Government of Western Australia has announced The Challenge – a global challenge to find a solution to the pressing problem of health service delivery in the remote and thinly populated Pilbara region of Western Australia. The Challenge aims to produce a world-leading medical research and innovation solution to help resolve the health service delivery issues faced in this remote area.

On average, Australians living in regional and remote areas have shorter lives and higher levels of disease and injury, in comparison to people living in metropolitan areas. Health outcomes for First Nations people in remote Aboriginal communities are significantly poorer.

The Challenge is to develop and propose a solution that uses technology, supported by research, to improve health outcomes for people living in regional and remote Western Australia.

The best solution will win the $5 million prize, supported by keystone partners Rio Tinto, BHP and the Future Health Research and Innovation Fund.

Submissions are encouraged from industry, private sector, public sector agencies, universities, research institutes or collaborations from around the world.

The winner will demonstrate proof of concept against an outcomes-based framework and can integrate solutions into existing models of healthcare delivery in the Pilbara.

Anyone interested in learning more about The Challenge is encouraged to visit the Challenge website and subscribe for updates.

Submissions open February 2023 and, in the meantime, resources are available to support your preparation and planning.
