The Department for Industry, Innovation and Science (DIIS) supports sustainable economic growth by assisting South Australian industries and businesses to succeed in a local and global environment.

Among our portfolio responsibilities is Science and Innovation – translating our state’s research strengths into greater economic, environment and health outcomes.

While translation and commercialisation take place right across South Australia, this activity is concentrated in South Australia’s network of innovation districts—dedicated spaces with the physical, digital and social infrastructure required to accelerate the industry application of new ideas.

Each innovation district is carefully curated to increase productivity, support the development of new-to-world products and services, solve complex industrial problems, deliver better healthcare, and strive for enhanced environmental outcomes.

South Australia’s maturing innovation districts are the result of significant investment by the Australian and South Australian governments, as well as industry, education and research partners.

Emerging from these districts, universities, and other globally competitive research institutes is an increasing number of high-growth startups in the fields of health, biotech, and medtech.

DIIS administers grants to support the growth of promising medtech startups—like MedTech Conference delegate Ferronova—through the Research and Innovation Fund and the SA Venture Capital Fund.
