Industry Mentoring Network in STEM

Aiming to narrow the cultural gap that exists in Australia between business and academia, the Industry Mentoring Network in STEM (IMNIS) is an award-winning mentoring initiative that connects PhD students with high-profile industry leaders, and has received funding via the MTPConnect Project Fund Program to facilitate national expansion of the program.

IMNIS is a national Industry led mentoring initiative of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering (ATSE), linking each PhD student in STEM with an experienced industry mentor. Mentors share their experience, provide guidance and act as role models for one year. The aim is to develop a new generation of industry-aware PhD graduates.

Through engagement with industry mentors, graduate students expand their understanding of research and development, commercial activities and learn about the different career opportunities in relevant STEM industries. With multiple events throughout the year, PhD students also extend their professional network broadly across the STEM sector.

IMNIS has successfully piloted in multiple universities in three states and in recent surveys, the vast majority of participants stated they would strongly recommend the IMNIS program, with students saying it increased their understanding of industry and expanded their options outside of academia.

IMNIS was recognised in 2016 with a prestigious Business /Higher Education Round Table (B/HERT) Award for Best Higher Education and Training Collaboration. IMNIS partners with Industry groups including AusBiotech, NERA, METS Ignited, CSL and KPMG. Within the first three months, more than one-third of Australian universities have agreed to join the program.

This funding will expand the successful IMNIS pilot in Medical Technologies and Pharmaceuticals (MedTech-Pharma) to all States in collaboration with AusBiotech. The focus will be on second year PhD students in all STEM fields of relevance to the medical technology and pharmaceutical industry sector.
