About Bionics Institute

The Bionics Institute of Australia is an independent, not for profit research organisation.

Our mission is to undertake innovative research into areas of clinical need to develop medical devices, therapies and diagnostic tools which can help to transform people’s lives.

Our Institute is made up of talented staff who pioneer new technologies that address the unmet needs of patients living with hearing loss, tinnitus, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, balance and movement disorders, stroke, diabetes, Crohn's disease, and urinary incontinence.

Our work

Medical bionics is a multidisciplinary field of research combining bio(logy) and (electro)nics to develop devices that electrically modulate or monitor neural activity to provide innovative treatments for a range of medical conditions.

Scientists understand the physiology of how nerves respond to electrical stimulation, which forms the basis of bionic technologies. At the Bionics Institute our scientists work together with mechanical engineers, electrical engineers and biomedical engineers to develop safe and effective designs for bionic devices. Clinicians advise and collaborate with them at every step of the process.

In addition to strong partnerships with clinicians, we have forged vital relationships with patient care and advocacy groups as well as individual patients. These strong links between research, clinicians, patients and community groups are critical for the successful development of new devices and treatments.
