About the Event

Designed specifically for individuals who are excited by or engaged in developing new MedTech products, this one-day workshop provides participants with an understanding of how researchers and entrepreneurs can develop IP strategies as part of technology commercialisation.

Delivered by a panel of highly credentialed and award winning patent attorneys and MedTech commercialisation experts from FPA Patent Attorneys and Pharma Devices, The MedTech Edge: Integrating IP and Commercialisation offers participants a ‘how to guide’ for managing IP throughout a product’s life cycle. Participants will better understand how to protect ideas at every stage, from conception through prototyping, clinical trials, scientific publication, contract research, manufacturing, and subsequent market release, whilst raising capital and undergoing third party due diligence.

Course content

The MedTech Edge: Integrating IP and Commercialisation is a one-day workshop delivered in-person at the University of Melbourne, supported by the Victorian MedTech Skills and Devices Hub.

Consisting of four modules, this course will introduce researchers and entrepreneurs to strategies to use patents to create value during MedTech commercialisation. Course content has a distinctly MedTech flavour, to increase relevance and enhance learning. There will be as much interaction as possible, including discussions, quizzes and workshopping of examples.

By the conclusion of the workshop, participants will understand:

  • how IP strategy supports and integrates with commercialisation initiatives,
  • the skills needed to navigate the often-rigid patent system throughout the dynamic MedTech product development pathways, and
  • how to work more effectively with a patent attorney to optimise IP outcomes.

A post-workshop handbook is available to provide reference material including a glossary of terms, overview of patent timelines, and a selection of relevant guides to patents and designs.
