The Australian Government has introduced legislation to Parliament to establish the $15 billion National Reconstruction Fund (NRF).

The fund will invest across seven priority areas of the economy -- including medical science -- to leverage Australia’s natural and competitive strengths.

The NRF will be an independent financier that operates commercially to deliver a positive rate of return. It will provide a range of finance options including loans, equity investment and guarantees, and will be governed by an independent board who will make independent investment decisions guided by an investment mandate.

The government has identified $1.5 billion for medical manufacturing of the NRF’s $15 billion.

Consultation is now open to further define the scope of the seven priority areas for investment and how the fund will make investment decisions. Submissions close on 3 February 2023. More information, including a consultation paper, is available on the Department of Industry, Science and Resources consultation hub.
